Leitrim Genealogy Evening and book Launch

Ancestor Network and Leitrim Genealogy Centre will co-host a ‘Leitrim Genealogy Evening’   in The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon on  Friday 17th May at 6PM.      The full programme is below and all are welcome.  It will include the launch of a new genealogy guide  ‘Tracing your Leitrim Ancestors’    by Tom Coughlan.

A Leitrim Genealogy Evening:  Seminar and Book Launch. 

The meeting is co-hosted by Leitrim Genealogy Centre, and Ancestor Network who provide national services in tracing families and in publishing guides and reference works for family historians.  The seminar will include the formal launch of ‘A Guide to Tracing your Leitrim Ancestors‘ by Tom Coughlan.

6.00     Welcome and introduction.   

Patricia McCartan  –  Leitrim Genealogy Centre.  This centre  is  the primary source of family history information on the county.   

6.10.    Emigration from Leitrim: Causes and consequences  

This talk will cover the background to emigration from the county, its impact, and the current interest in the history of Leitrim families.  It will be delivered by Seán O’Súilleabháin,  formerly Leitrim County Librarian,  and founder of Leitrim Genealogy Centre.  

6.30.   Rentals as a family history source for Leitrim  

This talk will be given by Dr Jim Ryan of Ancestor Network.  It will cover  Rentals, which are the records kept by landlords on their tenants,  as a useful and overlooked genealogy source,  using local examples. 

7.00. Launch of ‘A Guide to Tracing your Leitrim Ancestors’

This  book will be formally launched by Seán O’Súilleabháin, with inputs by the author Tom Coughlan and by John Hamrock,  the CEO of Ancestor Network.     It is written by local genealogist Tom Coughlan and is a comprehensive guide to records available for tracing families in the county and is filled with information on what the records contain, and how and where they can be accessed. It includes guidance on researching in Irish archives and on the many on-line sources now available.

A Guide to Tracing your Leitrim Ancestors‘ by Tom Coughlan.

Tom Coughlan is a professional genealogist with a Diploma in Genealogy and Family History from University College Dublin and has significant experience in conducting family history research. Although he has conducted research in almost every Irish county, his primary interest is Co. Leitrim where his own family roots lie, and where he now lives.  In addition to research, Tom has presented genealogy courses and lectures; published articles on family history; and is a member of the expert team which provides genealogy advice to visitors to the National Library of Ireland.  He is also engaged in a long-term, wide-ranging study of aspects of Leitrim’s genealogical story.

A recent review of Flyleaf titles by the prestigous ‘Genealogist’s Magazine’ stated  ‘If you have ancestors in any of these counties,  buy the book’.
