Small Sources No. 18: Our publishing arm, Flyleaf Press, has been publishing a series of ‘Small Sources’ on its blog page for several years. These are lists of names which are too small to attract the attention of most of the guides. Nevertheless, these names can be gold-dust to someone out there. We are going to continue this list on the Ancestor Network site from now on, and we will also be moving the earlier blogs from the Flyleaf site to here, so keep an eye out for some quirky lists, and for some names of interest to you.
This list of 131 tenants is from the index to a rental of the Woulfe & Mansfield estate in the period 1783–1811. The original is in the National Library of Ireland, Ms. 9632. The Woulfe & Mansfield families had separate estates in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary (Woulfe) and Rathgormuck, Co. Waterford (Mansfield). In 1785 Elizabeth Woulfe married John Mansfield and the estates were combined. Further information on the estates is in the Landed Estates Database. The rental covers separate lands in the two counties, but they were managed as one, so the index includes tenants from both estates. The full details of holdings, rents, payments etc can be found in the rental. Note that this only includes names listed in the index. Names of further tenants can be found in the original rental records as the nominal tenants often act on behalf of groups in an area. The names are listed as spelled, and with the abbreviations used, e.g. Jno. = John, Wm. = William etc. Other useful information in the index (e.g. occupations, property names etc) is also included. The index has been ‘updated’ in places to show that the property has passed to another tenant. For example Joseph Coppinger now James Power suggests that the property of Coppinger is now occupied by James Power. The illustrations show (above) a sample rental record, and (at end) a part of the index . Ancestor Network will offer 1 free hour of research by a professional researcher to conduct further research on these individuals or obtain copies. Click here and quote ‘Tipperary SS18′ in the subject line. Note also that we publish a ‘Guide to Tracing your Tipperary Ancestors‘ by local historian Noreen Higgins-McHugh.
