Small Sources No. 18: This list of 131 tenants is from the index to a rental of the Woulfe & Mansfield estate in the period 1783–1811.The Woulfe & Mansfield families had separate estates in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary (Woulfe) and Rathgormuck, Co. Waterford (Mansfield). In 1785 Elizabeth Woulfe married John Mansfield and the estates were combined. Further information on the estates is in the Landed Estates Database.
The original is in the National Library of Ireland (Ms. 9632). The rental covers separate lands in the two counties, but they were managed as one, so the index includes tenants from both estates. The full details of holdings, rents, payments etc can be found in the rental. Note that this only includes names listed in the index.
An example of the index is at the end of this blog showing tenant names and the page number of each of their accounts. The full account gives the rent due and the payments made. The example above is the debit side of the account of John Treadinham who rented property at Kilnaresha in 1787 for £119.17.7 for each half-year. This man was obviously a major landholder or possibly a ‘middle-man’ who sublet this property to smaller tenants. Further information on land rental practices can be found in our article here.
Names of further tenants can be found in the original rental records as the nominal tenants often act on behalf of groups in an area. The names are listed as spelled, and with the abbreviations used, e.g. Jno. = John, Wm. = William etc. Other useful information in the index (e.g. occupations, property names etc) is also included. The index has been ‘updated’ in places to show that the property has passed to another tenant. For example Joseph Coppinger now James Power suggests that the property of Coppinger is now occupied by James Power.
